Job Title: Recreation Therapy Summer Intern                          


For 150 years, Epworth Children and Family Services has provided the St. Louis community with essential youth development services that have helped thousands of children overcome severe emotional and behavioral challenges caused by abuse or neglect. Epworth's innovative, holistic and comprehensive treatment approach helps youth focus on solutions, build on inherent strengths and communicate more effectively. More than 7,500 youth and families turn to Epworth each year for emergency shelter, residential and intensive treatment, family reunification therapy, transitional and independent living programs, special education, foster family care, prevention services and a 24-hour help line. Epworth's strength-based therapeutic philosophy builds on the individual strengths of youth and families, thus increasing the capacity of each to thrive in society.

Projects/Learning Outcomes:

This internship is available for summer or fall 2017 and will take course over 12-15 weeks and will be divided into two parts:

Weeks 1-4

The intern will work with the field representative to: become oriented into the agency, develop goals & expectations, observe initial assessment/ learn APIE process, and review policy & client treatment plans. In-services (CPR, First aid, Lifeguarding, Safe Crisis Management, Blood Borne Pathogens, etc.) may be attended to with supervisor approval. Interns will also be expected to observe our CHAMP (Children's Home Activities Meet Program) and Program meeting group at least once.

Weeks 4-15

Interns will choose a treatment team to work with and complete general duties such has attending meetings, completing assessments and documentation. Interns will be expected to complete these four tasks during this period: Plan and implement therapeutic and diversional groups, complete at least two site visitations, complete a special project by the twelfth week and complete an agency final evaluation.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Desired Majors: Students seeking a degree in recreation, psychology, or education
  • Desired Class Level(s): All Class levels
  • Compensation: Unpaid for class credit; Must be enrolled in a college degree program
  • Time Commitment: 40 hours each week over the course of 12-15 weeks
  • Other: Interns will follow all agency policies and departmental rules. Interns will work as a team member with the recreation department assisting whenever needed. Attendance and punctuality are expected
