Title:   Older Youth Services Intern

Site Supervisors: Lead Street Outreach Worker & Lead OYS Service Coordinator

Schedule: Monday - Friday, <20 hours/week,

                    Prefer times Mon - Fri: 12pm-5pm and Wed / Thur: 6pm-8pm       

Student Position Description:    This position is responsible for assisting with the needs of homeless, runaway, foster, and at-risk youth and connecting them with resources, crisis intervention, referral information, life skills instruction, and tangible goods to provide for their basic needs. Knowledge of St. Louis neighborhoods and understand the dynamics of street youth preferred. Experience working with runaway, homeless, foster care, and street youth and/or youth who have emotional and behavioral issues is preferred.  

Internship Learning Plan


Learning Objective #1: Students will learn the core elements of service provision to older foster, homeless, runaway and at risk youth.

  1. Students will assist with supervision of youth attending OYS programming, providing basic needs and crisis intervention services to at-risk, runaway and homeless youth on the streets and in the Drop-In Center.
  2. Students will assist with structured life skills classes in the Drop-in Center during the day and on Wednesdays and Thursdays evenings.
  3. There are opportunities for interested students to develop new curriculum and/or facilitate group life skills instruction under the supervision of trained instructors.
  4. Students will learn how to complete required client intake and enrollment documentation.
  5. Students will conduct street outreach with experienced staff out in the community in an effort to locate homeless and at-risk youth in need of services.
  6. Students will assist with the planning and participate in special youth activities and events on site and out in the community.
  7. Student will participate in outreach events and community presentations when available.


Learning Objective #2: Students will learn how to effectively interact and develop rapport with youth utilizing Positive Youth Development approach.

  1. Students will attend PYD and all other agency required trainings for this position.
  2. Students will shadow experienced staff and role model daily living skills and socially acceptable behavior to youth in the OYS program.
  3. Students will provide structure, limits, guidance and consistency in youth activities.


Learning Objective #3: Students will learn how to assist and connect youth to appropriate agency and community resources.

  1. Students will attend team and community meetings to learn about resources available to youth.
  2. Research current and potential referral resources appropriate for OYS youth.
  3. Research potential employment resources for youth; organize and maintain the employment resource board in the Drop-in Center.
  4. Students will assist clients in the completion of applications, financial aid forms, and other documents that may further a youth's progress towards achievement of his or her goals.

 Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Desired Majors: Psychology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Education or Related Field
  • Desired Class Level(s): Undergraduate
  • Compensation: Unpaid for class credit; Must be enrolled in a post-secondary degree program
  • Time Commitment: 1-2 Semesters; 10-20 hours per week.
  • Availability: Weekdays; Wednesday and/or Thursday evenings until 8:30 P.M 
  • Evaluation: Evaluation of student learning and progress will occur regularly via 1:1 sessions throughout the internship experience. Epworth will conduct a formal evaluation of student learning at least once throughout the internship period and will coincide with established university processing in coordination with the office of Field Instruction.
